What is Straddling Bus or TEB ?
Straddling Bus or Transit Explore Bus (TEB) is a proposed bus concept by Shenzhen Hashi Future Parking Equipment Company ( China ). The concept was first unveiled at the 13th Beijing International High-tech Expo in 2010. But the concept was put on hold due to safety concern.
The Straddling bus was selected as a top Transportation invention in the list of the 50 Best Inventions of the Year 2010 by Time Magazine.
On May 22nd at the 19th Beijing International High-Tech Expo (2016), Shenzhen Hashi Future Parking Equipment Co showcased a working model of their bus concept. This time, Chinese Govt. officials praise their efforts and gave the permission for a trail run.
“The biggest advantage is that the bus will save lots of road space. Four other Chinese cities Nanyang, Shenyang, Tianjin and Zhoukou have also signed contracts for the pilot projects involving the construction of hundreds of miles of tracks. We are very positive that the construction will start in late 2016.”

He also said that “The construction will be done in the timeline one-year. And the cost will be 80% cheaper than the underground train project. We took every step to ensure the safety of the passengers.
“The biggest advantage is that the bus will save lots of road space. And one TEB could replace 40 conventional buses. And vehicles lower than 2 m (6.6 ft) height will be able to pass underneath the bus. And will reduce the traffic jams by 25-30%” He further added.
Mr. Youzhou also told reporters that a prototype will be deployed by the mid of 2016 in Qinhuangdao, which is about 300 km east of Beijing. He further added that the concept bus is capable of carrying around 1,400 passengers. And the bus can run at the speed of 60Km/H (37 mph).
There are some critics of this project as well. Who are against of this project. They are concern about the safety of those vehicles on the road. And also claims that this bus will need straight roads. It is very unlikely in old urban cities. And how the Straddling bus will manage to stay on the ground at the turn.
On those claims, Mr Youzhou said “Guardrails would be constructed between the bus tracks and the car lanes to prevent accidents. The rails would be able to absorb at least 70% of a collision’s impact to reduce damage to the bus and other vehicles. Lanes for the bus would be limited to passenger vehicles no higher than 7.2 ft (2.2 m), and the buses are designed to meet zoning and bridge height regulations in each city.”
He also said, ” The buses are fully capable of staying remain on the ground on the turns even at the speed of 60 km/h. The bus will save up to 860 ton of fuel per year and also reduce 2,640 ton of carbon emission.”
